Rise of the Runelords

Festival and Fire.

The Swallowtail Festival begins.

It is the 23rd of Rova, the autumnal equinox, and our heroes are gathered at the open air plaza where Church Street ends and Sandpoint Cathedral stands proud.

Mutsu Enmey, brawling champion of The White Deer takes part in the annual wrestling match, and after a difficult bout with Sabyl Sorn, the owner and caretaker of The House of Blue Stones, narrowly looses, though gracefully.

Ragnar, the stolid bouncer/guard of Ameika Kaijitsu’s inn, the White Deer, takes part in the goblin toss games and for his effort wins a tasty raspberry tart from The Sandpoint Savories.

Alden Finliss Lem, Sandpoint’s embalmer and resident graveyard ghoul, tries to find his luck in a game of dice and wins a few golden crowns for his skill with sleight of hand.

Shana Lem, Alden’s sister, wins the Devil Hunt, an archery contest where she manages to shoot the bullseye of the feared Sandpoint Devil marquee. As a reward she receives one of Alma Avertin’s raspberry pie as well as a silver farthing.

The day is bright and everyone is enjoying themselves until someone in the town square shouts “goblin!” Most people panic as goblins swarm over Sandpoint, crawling up and over the broken main gate, and slithering through the mass of people. The militia gathers to respond but they can’t hold the tide. Mutsu takes the opportunity and starts grappling and flinging goblins with abandon. Ragnar uses everything available to smash and stab the loathsome creatures and carves a path which Shana taka advantage of as she snipes stray goblins left and right. Alden patrols the outskirts of the battle, vary of getting to close to a goblin dogslicer, and quickly deals with any fleeing goblins.

Then through the screams and crackle of flames the heroes hear the goblin warchanters sing:

Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!

Goblins race and goblins jump
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!

Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins, you be food!

The town’s square is a chaos and the goblins rush with glee written plain on their faces. Shana, Ragnar, Aldin and Mutsu band together and move to where the warchanter and goblin leader, riding a hideous beast known as the goblin dog fight. Shana and Mutsu engage the warchanter and quickly finish him while Aldin and Ragnar try to work together so that Aldin can sneak up on the goblin leader. Unfortunately the goblin dog senses Aldin approaching and bites him in the side, dealing him a grievous blow. Lying there, dying, Aldin can only watch as the goblin leader moves on to Ragnar, Shana and Mutsu. However, the friends work together as a team and quickly dispatch the monsters. With their leader down and dying the remaining goblins scatter.

As Shana and Ragnar help Aldin back to his feet and force a healing potion down his throat a man staggers from behind an upturned cart. Stammering he thanks them for saving his life and introduces himself as Aldern Foxglove a minor lordling who owns a manor-house a few hours south of Sandpoint. He immediately closes in on Aldin and thanks him, vigorously, for giving his life so that he might live. Aldin, very much alive, looks bewildered. Nonetheless, Aldern Foxglove thanks the party and tells them that he will remember their valor.

The heroes, battered and bruised, retire to the White Deer to rest and make sense of what happened.
